Personal Details:
Son of Jesse Robert and Daisy Jane Mount, of 7 Stanley Gardens, Herne Bay, Kent

Robert was an old Council School boy and on leaving school was apprenticed to Mr J  Fendon of North Street. Later he acted as messenger for the N.F.S. and volunteered for the R.A.F. in 1941.

According to the 156 Squadron Operations Record Book (ORB) F/Sgt. Mount's first sortie  was on the 23/12/1943, to Berlin, followed a week later again to Berlin on 01/01/1944 and again the following night to Berlin on his final mission.

His operational time on the squadron amounted to only  ten days.

His final mission, to Berlin, on the 02/01/1944 took off from Warboys at  00:04 and crashed at Riesdorf. His captain F/O Cairns, with 46 sorties credited, had flown previously with 150 Squadron, his DFM being gazetted on 27 October 1942. (details from Chorley's Bomber Command Losses)

Of the 14 aircraft despatched from this squadron on this mission, 5 aircraft did not return. 33 Crew Members were killed and 3 Crew Members ended up as POWs.

A staggering loss rate of 35.71%

F/Sgt Mount has no known grave and is remembered on the Runnymede Memorial.
