This NCO has carried out 31 operational flights over Germany and Italy, 15 of which have been with this squadron.On the 28th August 1942 the aircraft in which he was flying as Tail Gunner was attacked by a Ju 88 near Antwerp. Although his turret was rendered unserviceable by enemy cannon fire, Fligh Sergeant Stafford by cool and skilful direction enabled his aircraft to evade the fighter and return safely to base.Flight Sergeant Stafford has at all times displayed exceptional ability. His thorough grasp of knowledge of gunnery in all its aspects and his thoroughness in preparing for an operational sortie have greatly contributed to the success of the mission.
