1027515, Sergeant Ronald John WOOLMER, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, No. 156 Squadron.
L.G. 10/12/1943. Wireless Operator/Air Gunner. Press Release.
This airman has displayed great devotion to duty during many missions against heavily defended targets in Germany and enemy occupied territory.
In August, 1943, when returning from an attack on Hamburg, the rear gunner became unconcious through lack of oxygen. Sergeant Woolmer went to his aid and whilst rendering assistance, the turret turned and his hand became jammed. Despite intense cold and pain, he held the uncouncious gunner for over five minutes, preventing him from falling from the aircraft.
This airman has contributed greatly to the excellent record achieved by his crew.
