Acting Flight Lieutenant Mackson THOMPSON (132382), Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, No. 156 Squadron.
THOMPSON, Edward Mackson, A/F/L (132382, RAFVR*) - No.156 Squadron - Distinguished Flying Cross - awarded as per London Gazette dated 12 November 1943. Born in Aberdeen, 1914. Home in Edinburgh. Enlisted 1940. Citation in Air Ministry Bulletin 12011.
As an air gunner, this officer has displayed exceptional keenness and determination, even in the face of heavy opposition.
During an attack on Hamburg in July 1943, his aircraft was engaged by the ground defences and his turret was badly damaged by anti-aircraft fire. Despite this, he continued to give perfect fire control and was largely instrumental in guiding the aircraft out of the target area safely and evading an attack by an enemy fighter.
Throughout many other sorties Flight Lieutenant Thompson has displayed a similar high courage and devotion to duty.
