83 20/04/1943  Stettin  ED312  Lancaster I  T/o 2123 Wyton. Badly shot about by a Ju 88 which attacked the Lancaster at 16,000 feet. During the engagement, F/S Ford was wounded. With the port inner fuel tank badly holed, course was set for Sweden, where an attempt to land at Malmo was unsuccessful. The pilot then turned away towards the sea and ditched. All were returned to the UK within a few weeks, resuming their operational tour. Two were subsequently killed in action.
