Mooney, Laurence. 615997 Sgt, 101 Sqn. LG 21/1/44. 30 sorties. 185.20 flying hours. Flt Engr.
Throughout his operational tour successfully completed with this squadron, Sergaent Mooney has displayed a constant spirit of determination and a high standard of keeness and efficiency. A steady and very reliable N.C.O. whose 30 sorties, many of which were against the heavily defended area of the Rhur, have all been carried out with cool courage and tenacity of purpose worthy of the highest praise.
Sergeant Mooney is a Flight Engineer whose aircraft has on several occasions been badly damaged by flak, notably on the night of 25th of July, 1943, when engaged on an attack on Essen, his starboard outer motor was hit and caught fire. With magnificent presence of mind and great skill, Sergeant Mooney instantly extinguished the fire and feathered the propeller, thereby saving a valuable engine from complete distruction.
By his cheerful confidence and splendid devotion to duty, this N.C.O. has set a magnificent example to his comrades and it is recommended that his record of achievement be recognised by the award of the Distinguished Flying Medal.
