Comments 20/12/42 - F/Sgt F.C.H. LEWIN and crew appear on Squadron

P/O Double was a navigation instructor with 81 OTU, RAF Sleap and was on board Whitley LA924 when the front escape hatch gave way as he walked over it and he fell to his death (not wearing his parachute). In the subsequent investigation the ground crew personnel were found ‘blameworthy for not notifying the wear and tear on the hinges”. A very tragic end after surviving his tour of ‘ops’.

DFM  17/08/1943  L.G. 17/8/1943 Sorties 27, Flying Hours 154.46. Air Bomber. Air2/8974

Since October, 1942, Sergeant Double has taken part as Bomb Aimer in 27 operational sorties. over enemy territory and has completed 154 hours operational flying. These operations include a daylight attack on Essen and night attacks on Duisberg (2), Hamburg (2), Stuttgart and Mannheim as well as numerous sorties on other targets in Germany and France and the laying of mines in enemy waters. Under a calm and quiet manner, he hides a fine offensive spirit. He has always pressed home his attacks with the utmost determination, frequently in the face of strong enemy opposition. This action has inspired his crew and contributed in a large measure to the success of his operations. I strongly recommend that he is awarded the Distringuished Flying Medal.

Remarks by Station Commander.
By his determination and offensive spirit in the face of enemy opposition, Sergeant Double has as an Air Bomber set an example to other members of the crew and to this squadron as a whole. He has a fine operational record and is strongly recommeded for the award of the Distinguished Flying Medal
