DFM  5/12/1944  Flight Sergeant 1487539 Weston APPLEBY, R.A.F.V.R., 156 Sqn.

L.G. 8/12/1944. Sorties 50. Flying Hours 248.20 Air Gunner. Air2/8882.

Flight sergeant Appleby has completed 50 operational sorties, 39 of which have been carried out with the Pathfinder Force. Many of his sorties have been on heavily defended German targets.

This N.C.O. by his vigilance and correct directions to his pilot has on many occasions been responsible for the successful evasion of enemy aircraft. He is a courageous and determined gunner and is unflinching in the face of enemy attacks. He has been involved in may hazardous operations but in spite of this, his operational zest is still undiminished. His devotion to duty has been of a high order and I recommend him for the award of the Distinguished Flying Medal.
